God’s Word Becomes Open to Me
Without a doubt, the most significant landmark in my Christian life, and even in my human life, was my attendance of my first 10-day Bible training held by Witness Lee in the summer of 1975. That training, held at the Anaheim Convention Center and attended by three or four thousand believers, changed my life in a positive way that affects me even to this day. How?
Until then, I was a Christian, no doubt – I had received the Lord Jesus as my Savior at the age of seven; I was baptized when I was in high school. However the Bible was a distant book.
I had no reason for going to the training, but a small inward sense told me, “Alan, you should go.” And so, with a dozen or so from Sacramento, I went, not knowing what I was in for. The outward circumstances of the training were, at best, uncomfortable to me…10 days of sitting in a jam-packed convention center room; three meetings a day (two in the morning, one in the evening); traveling back and forth to my host’s home; being a shy, quiet, 22 year old in the midst of strangers from around the country (loving, but still strangers); and, studying material presented by Witness Lee (the topic of the training was “The Life-Study of Hebrews”).
Regardless, by the time I returned home, I was a changed person. For the first time in my life, I had the strong inward realization that the Word of God was living and operative, full of life and light, and very deep and meaningful. Through Witness Lee’s ministry, the Bible became open to me. My response upon getting home was to publicly consecrate myself, with tears, to the Lord Jesus and to His church. To this day, even twenty-four years later, I am still thankful to the Lord for allowing me to attend that training and for opening His word to me.
